Never Fail Hard Boiled Eggs

I love hard boiled eggs. They are a handy and healthy snack and are relatively inexpensive. Whenever I think of it, and I know we have a few extra eggs in the fridge, I will make a batch of hard boiled eggs. Heck, I will even buy an extra dozen eggs for the week just for the specific purpose of making hard boiled eggs.

It took me a long time, but I have finally figured out THE way to make them. I no longer worry if they are done properly and they always peel like a dream. The process for my never fail hard boiled eggs is pretty simple!

Never Fail Hard Boiled Eggs

Step 1: Add cold water, salt, and eggs to a pot

I always use the same pot when I make hard boiled eggs and I always make a complete dozen. Again, now that I’ve found my “secret” to the perfect hard boiled eggs, I do not monkey around.

I use a Calphalon 4.5 Quart pot. Aside from being my hard boiled eggs pot, it came with a steamer insert, so it is pretty versatile and it is the pot we use most often in our cooking adventures.

I fill the pot with 12 cups of COLD water, add 1/4 tsp salt, and then add in 12 eggs.

Step 2: Bring the water to a boil

Place your pot on the stove, turn the heat on and wait for the water to get to a gentle boil. I consider the water to be gently boiling when bubbles have formed on the bottom and are floating up to the top.

Step 3: Gently boil for 10 minutes

Once you have reached a gentle boil, keep this going for 10 minutes.

Step 4: Remove from heat and cover for 5 minutes

After you have boiled the eggs for 10 minutes, cover the pot, remove from heat, and let the eggs sit for 5 minutes. The easiest way to remember how much time you need to rest is that it is half the amount of time they boiled (10 divided in half equals 5).

Step 5: Place in ice water

After the eggs have rested, use a slotted spoon to remove from the pot, then plunge them into a bath of ice water. I leave them sit in the water for at least 15 minutes. Then, simply place them in the fridge. You are done!

In my household, we eat hard boiled eggs as a snack. However, we also enjoy a good egg salad sandwich, sliced on top of a salad, deviled eggs, or using them chopped up in our favorite macaroni salad.

PS – Do you like the red plaid background in the photos? It is actually a plaid glass cutting board I got for Christmas!
